Windows Vista Complete PC Backup and Restore utility

This is a Microsoft software. Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise come with a more advanced backup and restore utility called Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore. This program allows you to create an entire backup of your computer that can be used to restore your computer. Unlike the standard backup that comes with all the versions of Windows Vista, Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore allows you to not only restore your data but also the complete operating system.

Backup:

  1. All Programs menu option.
  2. Click on the Maintenance folder.
  3. Click on the Backup and Restore Center icon.

Disk Images With Acronis True Image

A disk image is a bit-by-bit exact copy of a hard drive or partition. An Acronis True Image is saved as an archive and as such may be mounted and accessed as if it were another drive. True Image can image any drive. It is more reliable than Windows Vista Complete PC Backup and Restore, and it produces a smaller image. The Acronis Rescue CD uses Linux.

After installing Acronis True Image you should create bootable rescue media. Insert a blank CD or DVD into your CD/DVD burner. Launch True Image, Go to Tools, Create Bootable Rescue Media.

Backup:

  1. Open Acronis True Image and click Backup and Restore. Click Backup, Next, Choose My Computer, Next, Choose Disk and Partitions, Next, Choose the disk Vista is installed on, click Next, and Next again.
  2. Choose the location you want to save the image to and pick a name for it. Click Next.
  3. The first time you use it make sure you choose "Full Backup."
  4. Use high compression and Validate Archive. The Validate setting is under Additional settings.
