Geeqie

Perhaps the most useful image viewer and also in the Mint repository. Highly recommended. 

sudo apt install geeqie

When you zoom in on an image the window does not automatically enlarge, however, it will zoom an image automatically to fit the window. It has many image zoom options and zoom memory. You can also hide any part of the interface such as the files view on the left. This is a better image viewer than the classic ACDSee 2.21 (not a linux software but runs well under wine.) Geeqie is a 5 star image viewer as of version 1.2.2

Viewnoir

Has some good features such as the ability to control the action of the mouse wheel (scroll though images in a directory or zoom level). However, it is not in the default repository. Use this if you don't care for Geeqie, however, I still prefer Geeqie. 

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:skellat/flow1
sudo apt-get update
apt-get install viewnior

viewnoir can edit and save which I don't need in an "image viewer."

You can remove the repository without uninstalling viewnoir (I don't necessarily want other software from skellat, but if you do, then leave it. 

add-apt-repository --remove ppa:skellat/flow1

If you want to delete a PPA repository as well as all packages installed/upgraded from the PPA, you can use "ppa-purge" command, simultaneously this downgrading installed packages to the version from official mint base. But to keep viewnoir after removing the repository do not "ppa-purge."

Feh and Qiv

The feh image viewer. Command line image viewer with no GUI menu interface. The qiv image also has no interface, it can be launched only from the command line. Also consider "display" which is part of both the ImageMagick and GraphicsMagick packages, so if you have them installed then you probably won't need feh or qiv - although feh still has some useful functions that make it worth having.

You can open a single image in feh, or you can open a folder of images which allows you to scroll through a set of images with a mouse click or by using the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard. Feh has some options that do things such as control whether Feh's window has a border, set the minimum and maximum sizes of the images you want to view, and tell Feh at which image in a folder you want to start viewing.

GPicView

Simple and fast image viewer opens large image files well.

Ristretto

This comes with xfce. Has an interface with thumbnails on the left, and you can move through the images by clicking the navigation keys at the top of the window.

Mirage

Mirage lets you resize and crop images as well as view them, so it technically is more than a viewer and therefore that might turn some people off that are looking for a read-only viewer.

XnView

XnView aka XnViewMP aka XnView MP - This is far more than a image viewing software, and would not be considered lightweight. However, it is extremely useful and highly recommended to have installed along with your favorite basic image viewing software. XnView can open most any existing image format and export it to most any existing image format. For example, if you need to open a legacy Paint Shop Pro image file ( PSP File ) and found the PSP Plugin for GIMP does not work, you can use XnView. the XnView application is not (as of 2019) currently in the Ubuntu or Mint repository but can be easily installed from a deb package.
