There are currently two versions of Graffiti with Palm. The original Graffiti system was the subject of a lawsuit from Xerox, claiming it violated Xerox's patent relating to its Unistrokes technology.

A court ruled that Palm violated Xerox's patent and ordered them to discontinue use of the original Graffiti system in further versions of its Palm OS software, which Palm did. It replaced the original Graffiti system with a licensed variant of the Jot system from CIC, which Palm refers to as Graffiti 2. It differs from the original Graffiti system in various ways, though it does recognize some of the original keystrokes (except the input method for punctuation and "i", "k", "q", "t").

The intent of Graffiti 2 was to make it less cryptic and similar to conventional handwriting. Graffiti 2 is from the commercial program Jot (www.cic.com). Some characters require two keystrokes for Graffiti 2 in contrast to one keystroke for Graffiti 1.

Many users have expressed frustration with PalmSource's move away form the Original Graffiti input system they have used and been accustomed to for many years. A simple method to replace Graffiti 2 has been discovered. The original Graffiti can be restored in a few simple steps. The process is not necessary for Palm TX users because it recognizes both versions of Graffiti, due to a recent court ruling in Palm's favor.
