The height for the rough in is 12" from the floor. New guidelines for accessible housing (ANSI Standard A117.1-1986, Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards, etc.) recommend raising this to between 18-24" above the floor. Many residents do not like them that high as they are unsightly for interior aesthetics. Standard mounting heights vary from installer to installer. Common receptacle heights vary from 12" to 24" with 16" or 18" center to center being most common.

Measure and mark the center of each box. Use letters and symbols to identify boxes. Add 2x4 blocks to position boxes away from wide window and door trim.

Switch heights are usually around 52" or 54" to center, but, to accomodate some kinds of disability access or wheelchair considerations, many people use 36" switch heights and 24" receptacle heights.
