PS3 blinking red light error

PS3 blinking red light is also called RLOD (Red Light of Death).

The blinking red light on PS3 might appear when you are playing graphics-intensive games. In fact, many factors can sparkle the PS3 red blinking light error. According to an investigation, hard drive failure and console overheating are the main causes for the error.

Main Cause: overheating.

2nd Possibility: Hard drive failing.

YLOD aka Yellow Light of Death

The Yellow Light of Death (often abbreviated as YLoD) is a common problem which affects the original PHAT model PS3s. The usual cause for this light is a failing GPU, caused by a bump failure between the die and interposer, because of a low quality underfill being used. This failure is known as bumpgate and affected early PS3s with a 90nm GPU (CECHAxx to CECHHxx models). Later model PHAT model PS3s used a 65nm GPU, and are way less likely to develop this problem. Most slim models use a 40nm GPU, which is considered completely reliable and is unaffected by GPU related YLoDs. The YLoD can usually be fixed in older PlayStation 3's by replacing the 90nm GPU with the 65 or 40nm one from later consoles. This requires a lot of skills and a rework station, but is usually a permanent fix for YLoDs.
