Understanding RGB and CMYK color models

RGB

  • RGB is an additive color model
  • RGB acronym: red, geen, blue
  • RGB deals with light

CMYK

  • CMYK is a subtractive color model.
  • CMYK acronym: cyan, magenta, yellow, and key
  • Key is equivalent to the color black.
  • CMYK deals with print

RGB-to-CMYK

Converting a graphic image from RGB to CMYK results in colors being shifted. The converting software within the restraints of its own programming logic gets as close as possible to the appearance of the original RGB colors in the image. RGB colors out of the CMYK color gamut are converted to the nearest CMYK color.
