This page is primarly about XnView MP but makes mention to the classic XnView.

XnView MP is not Open Source but for most users it is free.

XnView MP 0.84 the recent update c2019, is the enhanced version of XnView Classic. XnView MP is a powerful cross-platform media browser, viewer and converter, with over 500 compatible formats.

Most notably useful is the ability of XnView to open classic Paint Shop Pro vector image files.

XnView Variants

The author published various other products using the classic or the multi-platform XnView code base, some examples are:

  • XnViewMP — the designated successor of classic XnView, current version 0.93.1
  • Nview — the DOS4GW predecessor of XnView
  • NConvert — command-line batch convert tool (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • XnConvert — GUI batch convert tool (Linux, macOS, Windows), current version 1.75
  • Xn — apps for iOS and Android (XnRetro, Sketch Me!, Gif Me!, Hypocam, ...)
  • XnShell — File Explorer / Windows Explorer shell extension (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • GFL-SDK — free developer library used in tools by third parties

Installation

As of 2019 the XnView application still does not seem to be available via the default Ubuntu or Mint repositories (probably because it is not FOSS), nor does there seem to be one available. However, it can easily be installed as a debian package. Follow these instructions verified to work on Mint 18.3 (and probably all contemporary releases).

sudo apt-get install gdebi
wget http://download.xnview.com/XnViewMP-linux-x64.deb
sudo gdebi XnViewMP-linux-x64.deb

You can probably skip the first step as the default installation of Mint 18.3 seems to have gdebi (Debian Package Installer) already present. If you are on a 32-bit system (so not Ubuntu or Mint) then you can modify line #2 to download http://download.xnview.com/XnViewMP-linux.deb instead and then sudo gdebi XnViewMP-linux.deb.

If you decided you don't want XnView anymore simply remove like this:

sudo apt-get remove XnViewMP

On Linux Mint to launch XnView simple go to the main menu and:

  • Menu -> Graphics -> XnView Multi Platform
