HowTo Backup and Upgrade XXXXXXXXXXXX in MediaWiki
based on: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Upgrading adapted to the XXXXXXXXX
1. backup the mediawiki mysql database with mysqld running. (do not stop the mysqld service)
mysqldump -u root -p --default-character-set=latin1 XXXXwiki -c > XXXXwiki-backup.sql
2. backup the mediawiki filesystem which contains configuration files and uploaded images
tar -sp -zcvf /XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX/mediawikiXXXXXX.tgz /XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX/mediawikiXXXXXX
3. get the latest version of MediaWiki (below example only, version 1.16.4) The latest version is at: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Download
wget http://download.wikimedia.org/mediawiki/1.16/mediawiki-1.16.4.tar.gz
4. extract directly into existing mediawiki installation using special replace syntax
tar xvfz mediawiki-1.16.4.tar.gz cp -r mediawiki-1.16.4/* /XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX/mediawikiXXXXXX/
5. run the php shell update script
cd /home/httpd/webapps/mediawikiXXXXXX/maintenance php update.php
6. fix permissions
cd /XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX/mediawikiXXXXXX chgrp XXXXX * -R chown XXXXX * -R chmod XXX * -R
