2009 Year Upgrades

Chrysler updated the 2009 model with Hill Start Assist (HSA) to help prevent rollback on graded surfaces, and then incorporated Trailer Sway Control (TSC) that monitored vehicle movement while towing, relative to its intended path.

A new center dome lamp with directional lighting, drop in center console bin, and cargo nets for additional storage were added to the interior although mine did not have said cargo nets.

All 2-door Wranglers came with a 2,000lb maximum towing capacity. The JK 2 door came with a standard 3.6L V6 engine which pushed out 202hp, 237 ft-lbs of torque. Wrangler X vehicles also ran with 16 inch wheels.

Features such as front and rear solid axles, hard or soft top options, removable doors and mirrors, two-speed transfer case, fold down windshield and full size tailgate-mounted spare tire remained standard.

Miscellaneous

Disable seat-belt alarm

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, and buckle the driver’s seat belt.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACCESSORY/RUN position (engine does not need to be running), and wait for the Seat Belt Warning Light to turn off.
  3. Within 60 seconds of starting the vehicle, unbuckle and then re-buckle the driver’s seat belt at least three times within 10 seconds, ending with the seat belt buckled.
  4. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. A single chime will sound to signify that you have successfully completed the programming.

The Enhanced Warning System (BeltAlert) can be reactivated by repeating this procedure.

The important steps are:

  • DO NOT START THE JEEP.
  • Get in
  • Buckle-up
  • Turn the key to ACC on.
  • Once the seat belt dummy light goes out, unbuckle and buckle 3 or more times.
  • Turn off and remove the key. You should hear a confirmation tone.

Disable security alarm

  • It might be possible to disable the security alarm by the removal of a specific fuse. Fuse M13 (see fuse section). This will also likely disable the keyless entry option. Removal of fuse M13 does not disable the alarm.

Security alarm problems

The security alarm goes off for a number of reasons, it is triggered too easily.

Unlocking the doors with the manual door lock plungers or the driver’s door lock cylinder will not disarm the Vehicle Security Alarm.

The Sentry Key Immobilizer System prevents unauthorized vehicle operation by disabling the engine. The system does not need to be armed or activated. Operation is automatic, regardless of whether the vehicle is locked or unlocked. The system uses ignition keys that have an embedded electronic chip (transponder) to prevent unauthorized vehicle operation. Therefore, only keys that are programmed to the vehicle can be used to start and operate the vehicle. The system will shut the engine off in two seconds if someone uses an invalid key to try to start the engine.

Issues

Death Wobble

Described as a lack of control by cause of shaking in the steering and frame typically at speeds in excess of 55mph and possibly triggered by a bump or depression in the road. This condition makes the jeep very difficult to control, thus presenting a danger to motorists.

The high level of shaking and vibration root cause is usually an issue with the vehicle's components, most commonly the suspension. Track bar bushings, tie rods, and ball joints become worn over time and are primary factors in the death wobble condition. Misaligned wheels can also cause a lot of imbalance in your entire suspension system. According to sources the primary culprit is the track bar.

Chrysler produces the Jeep Wrangler. They recalled recalled over 190,000 Wranglers from 2018 and 2019 to replace the front suspension steering damper. Yet, this did not seem to resolve the issue for many owners. Chrysler refuses to acknowledge the Jeep Death Wobble as a legitimate problem n previous model years including the 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The problem is related to the design of the Jeep Wrangler itself. A design that makes the Jeep so good at off road and rough terrain also works against the Jeep at higher speed highway stability when parts become worn.

Defective Chrome Cap Lug Nuts

Chrysler manufacturer used a two-piece lug nut that has a chrome cap over the steel lug nut. The problem with these lug nuts is that water and salt gets between the nut and cap. The resulting corrosion causes the cap to swell and change the outer diameter of the nut. For the driver, this often means the lug wrench in the trunk will no longer fit when they need to change a tire by the side of the road. Severe corrosion can cause the chrome cover to fall off and expose the steel nut underneath. You can end up stranded on the side of the road if you can’t remove the lug nuts to change a flat tire.

It is recommended that you replace the factory chrome cap lug nuts with a solid chrome replacement lug nut. Although they are different in appearance, they will resolve the issue of the defective swollen lug nuts. If you go with the solid lug nut replacement, make sure they are long enough and have the correct size hex for your lug wrench.
