1. Chikka Messenger - This is software you have to install. Ranking very low because after all the work installing and registering, it didn't work at all. Recipient must approve an invite prior to receiving messages.
2. Sendsmsnow.com ( http://www.sendsmsnow.com/ ) - nice address book feature. free to send as many single messages as you want. pay to send bulk messages. None of the messages I sent ever made it to the recipient.
3. Textforfree.net ( http://www.text4free.net/ ) - Not recommended, you have to know the recipient's provider, a captcha is required for each message, no address book. Useless.
4. SMS through GoogleTalk - Works well but is complicated to set up. Must have a gmail account. Supports address book. One msg to one person at a time. Free. Sends an automated opt-out message with your message which is not desirable but can be tolerated. How-to update: the error "Your message could not be delivered because you have sent messages to too many mobile contacts who have not responded." hurts GoogleTalk's usefulness as a PC to SMS medium.

7. Teleflip ( http://wapswap.com/sms/ )
8. Yahoo Messenger ( http://messenger.yahoo.com/features/sms/ )
9. MobiClient ( http://www.mobiclient.com/products/mobiclient.html ) - This is software you have to install. You have to know the recipient's cell provider to send a message. You can send 3 messages a day for free. The software is adware.
10. ForeverSMS ( http://foreversms.com/ ) - Web based. No address book support or bulk msg support.
11. SMS Everywhere ( http://smseverywhere.com/ ) - Web based. Address book and mass message options. Doesn't seem to work. Would not send my message. Auto-detects carrier based on number which is problematic when the same number is kept when user changes providers.
