Trisquel Linux is a distribution that is lightweight and entirely free utilizing only software and components that the Free Software Foundation fully approves. The term libre free is used to express that it contains nothing that is not entirely free of any restrictive license such that The GNU Operating System and the Free Software Movement would not approve.

Trisquel Linux is lightweight, the installer fits on a 700MB CD. Trisquel is based on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian Linux.

Because it is based on Ubuntu, it does not follow the traditional Linux standard. There are better small distributions. To create a simple console controlled Samba file server with this distribution turned out to be more headache than it was worth.

Console: Post Install Configuration

Networking from Console

DNS servers are listed in /etc/resolv.conf

Network configuration should be in /etc/network/interfaces however, the file seems to be ignored.

  • unresolved

Console: Samba Shares

Samba is discussed in Linux CIFS Utils and Samba and Linux CIFS Utils and Samba. Samba shares are configured in /etc/samba/smb.conf

vi /etc/samba/smb.conf

Use 'testparm' to check for errors in smb.conf

testparm smb.conf
