The 1986 C4 Corvette was the first to offer a third brake light, antilock brakes, electronic climate control, and key-code anti-theft system. This corvette had the 5.7 L (350 cu in) L98 V8 engine, producing 230 hp and 330 ft lbs of torque.

Service

Tools needed: 10mm and 8mm wrench. T30 Torx. Maybe also Vice Grips.

  • Disconnect Positive battery cable.

  • Follow "Fender Reposition" graphic (below) for battery removal.
  • Lift battery up and out of vehicle.
  • Reverse this procedure to install.
  • Torque battery cables to 19lb/ft.

  • On the 86 Corvette A and B screws are Torx size T30. There are 4 total, remove them all.
  • Remove (D) and loosen (E) with 10mm hex wrench.

Completely remove all 4 Torx screws and get them out of the way. Rather than trying to slide the panel rearward such as the illustration suggests, just pull it off and out of the way. It will not slide rearward without breaking.

Bolt (E) only needs to be loosened rather than removed. There is a slot in the panel that allows it to slide from the bolt once the bolt is loose.

The battery terminals on your 86 Corvette are 8mm. With age these soft metal hex heads often become rounded. This is where good Vice Grips come into play.
