Each VoIP user has an address or number through which the user is contacted. Apps released by VoIP services allow you to use, in most cases, the username or phone number you got when you registered with the service. There are third-party apps that are service-independent, allowing you to use them with any service. These use SIP addresses.

This article relates only to 3rd party software applications (Apps) that work with SIP services that are universally compatible. AKA - SIP-Based VoIP Apps - Session Initiation Protocol. This clearly excludes closed proprietary systems such as Skype and Google Voice. To better understand the distinction read IP Voice Communication.

Many of the free SIP apps will not operate in background or perform push notification. This results in an inability to receive incoming calls and text messages while the app is not open or has been terminated by the phone operating system to preserve battery reserve.

SIP apps on iOS and Android can perform push notifications and operate in the background without terminating. This is enabled by:

  • Push Notifications: Apps use Apple's Push Notification Service (APNs) to receive incoming call alerts.
  • Background Modes: VoIP apps can run in the background using the voip background mode in the app's settings.

This allows SIP apps to handle calls effectively while conserving battery life.

Not Recommended. Disconnects constantly. Undocumented errors. Too many versions.

ZoIPer tries to upsell yet so many versions not clear what to use.

Linphone

worked well for a few months then became unstable. crashes frequently.

SIP Droid

Works for calls, no SMS, very primitive interface however it did register to voip.ms right away and does not try to upsell.

MizuDroid

MizuDroid is an unlocked VoIP softphone for Android mobile phones and tablets based on open standards, compatible with all VoIP providers, software and devices using the SIP protocol.

The free softphone can be downloaded from Google Play Store for personal usage.

The Pro version ads more features such as G.729 and auto tunneling/encryption and it can be used also for commercial purposes or by companies.

SessionTalk SIP Softphone

Free version does not support premium features like Push Notifications, Video Calls, SMS ( SIP SIMPLE support only), Multiple SIP Accounts, Call Transfer, Dial Plan, Call Recording, G729 Audio codec

Android Sip Client

Motorola disables the dialer app so the built-in SIP client is unavailable. Other manufacturers are known to do this so don't count on using the built in Android dialer for SIP / VoIP.
