High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP)
From Free Knowledge Base- The DUCK Project: information for everyone
This is a bastard technology developed by Intel that prevents legitimate use and backup of digital video source. HDCP is a way of encrypting and transmitting a video signal stream. An HDCP encrypted signal may be applied DVI, HDMI, GVIF, and UDI connections.
The goal of HDCP is to plug the Analog Hole, and is similar to the old Macrovision analog copy protection scheme. It is a type of Digital Rights Management (DRM).
Note: It is recommended that consumers DO NOT PURCHASE devices with HDMI built in technology. Send a message to the manufacturers, that you do not want to be controlled and have your rights restricted. Windows Vista is an example of a technology with HDMI built into the operating system itself.
