OPENBSD NOTES: Serial Console Access         AUG 2005

Serial Console Setup for a Running System:

Before OpenBSD will give you a login: prompt at a device, it has to be enabled in /etc/ttys

edit the line that reads:

tty00 "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" unknown off

to read:

tty00 "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600" vt100 on secure
  • tty00 = the serial port we are using as a console
  • on = activates the getty for that serial port
  • secure = permits a root (uid 0) login at this console

Serial Console Boot Setup

reate or edit your /etc/boot.conf file to include the line:

set tty com0

The default baud rate is 9600bps, this can be changed with a /etc/boot.conf line using the stty option.
