An app based transportation network company based out of San Francisco, California. Uber was founded in 2009 as UberCab by Garrett Camp, a computer programmer and the co-founder of StumbleUpon, and Travis Kalanick, who had sold his Red Swoosh startup for $19 million in 2007.

Individuals that traditionally used a Taxicab Service to obtain a point to point ride can now be served by an Uber driver. For passengers, it's a way to to get a hopefully reliable ride for a fee from a driver with a private automobile. For drivers, Uber provides an opportunity to make extra income.
