Cleaning Swimming Pools and Drains

muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) is commonly used in cleaning and maintaining swimming pools. It lowers pH and alkalinity, removes calcium deposits, scale, stains, and buildup from pool surfaces, filters, and equipment.

Muriatic acid is generally safe for PVC plumbing when used diluted and for short contact times, such as in occasional drain cleaning or unclogging. It does not dissolve or corrode PVC directly. However, repeated use, undiluted application, or prolonged exposure can cause gradual damage, cracking, or weakening over time. It is not recommended for routine or frequent use in PVC drains. Muriatic acid is a stronger acid than both battery acid (diluted sulfuric acid) and apple cider vinegar.

  • Muriatic acid (typically 20-32% HCl) is a strong monoprotic acid with very low pH (around 0 or below for concentrated forms).
  • Battery acid (sulfuric acid diluted to ~29-40%) is also strong but slightly less acidic in terms of proton donation strength compared to concentrated HCl (pKa values indicate HCl is stronger).
  • Apple cider vinegar (dilute acetic acid, ~5%) is a weak acid with pH around 2.4-3, far less potent and much slower-acting.
