Thank you blenheim...@gmail.com == ubuntu variants == Kubuntu 12.10 (the KDE version of Ubuntu) will not fit on a CD-R, even if re-compressed with LZMA2 compression. The official Lubuntu and Xubuntu 12.10 images are already small enough to fit on a 700MB CD without re-compression.
