DisplayPort debuted in 2006 lead by VESA. DisplayPort v1.1 only matched HDMI 1.3 capabilities. Incremental updates improved DisplayPort until it became better than HDMI.

  1. Significantly higher display bandwidth enabling 5K and 8K resolutions
  2. Lower latency Variable Refresh Rate eliminating screen tearing
  3. Multi-monitor daisy chaining off one output

DisplayPort is the more consumer-friendly choice because it is open and free.
