The mode corresponds to whether the transistor is in an ON state or an OFF state at zero gate–source voltage. The depletion mode MOSFET and the JFET are very similar. JFETs cannot be used as enhancement mode devices because if the gate is forward biased it will conduct like a forward biased diode.
