Quick Connect Air Couplers

Terminology for 1/4" Quick Connect Air Couplers uses "industrial" and "automotive" labels common retail terms for two main styles of 1/4" NPT quick connects. They refer to the shape of the male plug (not the coupler itself), which determines compatibility.
Industrial vs Automotive
Style Plug Tip Shape Coupler Sleeve Markings Common Colors Notes ----- -------------- ----------------------- ------------- ----- Industrial Outward bevel/ring (M-style) Two stripes Red Tighter seal; standard for tools; less leak-prone. Automotive Inward bevel (T-style/Tru-Flate) One stripe Blue Slightly looser fit; common in auto shops; may hiss if low-quality.
These are not interchangeable without adapters but can connect sometimes not well.
Industry Standards
Beyond retail names, manufacturers use standardized profiles (e.g., Milton, ARO) for catalogs and specs:
- Industrial: M-style (Type D/I/M), red, ~32 CFM flow.
- Automotive: T-style (Type C), blue, ~32 CFM flow.
- Others: A-style (ARO, green, ~28 CFM); V-style (high-flow, purple, ~70 CFM for HVLP).
ARO and Milton
ARO and Milton are not simply alternative names for the Industrial and Automotive styles.
- Milton: Refers to M-style (also called Type D/I/M), which is the standard for Industrial couplers/plugs. It's the most common "industrial" type, with the outward bevel plug and red color-coding.
- ARO: Refers to A-style (Type A or ARO 210), a separate, less common profile with a different plug shape (slight inward taper) and green color-coding. It's compatible within its own series but not directly with M-style or T-style without adapters. Often used in older or specialized pneumatic systems, with slightly lower flow (~28 CFM vs. 32 CFM for M/T).
These are distinct interchange profiles alongside T-style (Automotive/Tru-Flate, blue) and others like V-style (high-flow). If mixing styles, use adapters or universal couplers to avoid leaks.
