Albrecht 2990 AFS
ALAN-Midland ALBRECHT AE2990 is an upgrade for old Magnum 1012, a handheld (HT) AM/FM/SSB (LSB & USB) two-way radio. This radio is not FCC Part 95 compliant. It is a member of a limited number of SSB 10 and 11 meter hand held radios available or previously available on the market.
The Albrecht AE-2990 AFS CB / USB LSB replaces the magnum 1012. With a easy mod you can use this radio from 25.165 Mhz to 29.655 Mhz giving access to CB radio and the 10 and 12 meter amateur radio bands.
The Albrecht AE 2990 AFS is a multi-band handheld CB radios with AM/FM and SSB. The slide on battery case can store 9 AA batteries (not included), hi/low power setting for a longer battery life, SQ setting, lock function and other features. Includes:
- HT Albrecht AE2990
- BNC Antenna
- waist support
- wrist strap
- Battery charger 9 type AA with socket for charging or for noner Alkaline batteries.
The battery pack takes 9 NiMH AA cells and has contacts on the bottom. A drop-in charger is available as an optional extra. The antenna supplied is about 8 inches long.
Power output is rated at 4W on FM and 4W PEP on SSB. The actual power measured on 10m FM from this radio was only 2.13W. There are five memory channels which store frequency and mode. You can select a shift or offset of up to 990kHz for repeater use. There is also a CTCSS tone option.
The modification to expand the frequency range is not extremely difficult but does require some soldering skill. Pull out the rubber PTT cover which reveals five contacts next to the PTT switch. Using a soldering iron and solder wick you remove a bridge between two contacts. Then you short out two other contacts while turning the radio on. Then choose your desired channel options, there are three for ham radio. Code 0 (10m + 12m switching between them using the CH9 button), Code 1 (10m band only with home frequencies 29.300 and 29.600 selected using CH9) and Code 2 (12m band only.) When configured for ham band use the radio displays frequency.
