Problem and Resolution

issues

UPDATE: pcmanfm version 1.3.2 on updated Mint Linux Mint 21.1 Vera kernel 5.15.0-102 is broken. smb support is broken after update. Also, pcmanfm has been in decline and is no longer recommended.

The once good and now broken file manager that is no longer in favor.

Current issues:

  • Slow SMB network share browsing issue
  • Crashes when browsing network shares
  • File and directory list does not refresh on network shares
  • Unable to fix poor toolbar arrangement (was better in previous versions)

This was once a superior to Nemo file manager and a recommended replacement for Nemo for users of Mint as well as a Nautilus for related distributions.

PCManFM has been in decline since 2020's and is currently broken as of version 1.3.2-1

resolution: distribution specific

Launch "Software Manager" on your Linux Mint Cinnamon desktop or equivalent and in the search enter "pcmanfm" the results from default repositories will offer 2 options:

  • pcmanfm
  • pcmanfm-qt

Uninstall pcmanfm and install pcmanfm-qt - this version seems to fix the SMB network browsing issues.
