Drone geofencing

In terms of drones, a Geofence can and does prevent a drone from flying into a restricted zone such as an airport or military installation. This technology can also be used to restrict drones from flying over areas such as parts of a city for the purpose of restriction and licensing. Geofences are created by using position location technology such as GPS (Global Positions Satellites), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), WIFI, and the drone’s software which processes the data and enforces the flight restriction.

Geofencing is a software routine found in most drones programming. DJI products especially use the drone’s GPS receivers to automatically enforce airspace restrictions based on where the craft is located. DJI introduced the first geofence in 2013 and since it has been adopted by other manufacturers as well as other location companies that provide GPS positioning data for drones.
