Relatively speaking, the speed of sound is 1120 feet per second or 768 miles per hour.

In the world of external ballistics, under ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) conditions the speed of sound is 1116.5 f/s and under Standard Metro (Army Standard) conditions it is 1120.27 f/s.

At sea level the speed of sound is 340.24 meters per second.

The speed of sound is known as the Sound Barrier. When an aircraft accelerates from transonic to supersonic it is said to break the sound barrier.

The speed of sound is expressed in a measurement known as Mach, each increment being a factor of the speed of sound.
