Ethernet over Copper

What advantages does Ethernet over Copper have over the older Integrated T1 line service? Lower cost is one big advantage. EoC is lower in cost and offers more bandwidth options. You can typically get 1 to 20 Mbps bandwidth with EoC. T1 lines are fixed at 1.5 Mbps, although they can be bonded to deliver higher speeds.

Alternatives

Other home network systems which do not require new wiring include:

  • Power line communication, which carries data over power wiring, often including home electrical wiring, using technologies such as HomePlug or Universal Powerline Association standards
  • In March 2009, HomePNA announced a liaison agreement with the HomeGrid Forum to promote the ITU-T G.hn wired home networking standard.<ref>

  • VDSL, VDSL2
  • Wi-Fi Wireless LANs and Bluetooth (replacing HomeRF)
  • DOCSIS
  • Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) carries data over coaxial cables, which are frequently installed to support multiple television sets throughout homes
